Lei LI was awarded the Doctor of Philosophy by Zhejiang University in 2021. From 9.2018 to 9. 2020, she was a visiting student in Theology Faculty, University of Basel. Her master study was completed in Sichuan University. She earned her bachelor degree from Liaoning University.

Her research interests are Sino-western cultural exchange and overseas Sinology. She presented her papers in Yale University, University of Hamberg, University of Lund and Chinese University of Hong Kong. Her publications are on International Sinology, Global History Review, Medical History and Sino-Christian Studies (forthcoming). She participated in the research programs: Archives Arrangement and Research for Missionaries in China between 1600 and 1900, the Activities of American Tibetan Missionary in Modern China and the Sino-Western Cultural Interactions. Her Phd dissertation is “A Heathen Civilization” with Hakka Grassroot Characteristics: A Study on the Basel Mission and Its Construction of the Image of Chinese Culture in German-speaking Europe (1900-1940). Currently, she is continuing her research on the Basel Mission.
